L.D. Batchelder Elementary School
175 Park Street North Reading, MA
This new elementary school was designed to fit on a historically sensitive site adjacent to the town common. The final design preserves the original historic school house and maintains the open feel of the town common, while providing a large up-to-date facility for learning. Site challenges included a rock ledge that extended out into the property taking up much of the buildable area, as well as eight different floor levels in the existing building that needed to be unified inorder to provide handicapped access.
The project was completed in 2006 and received an honor award from the Massachusetts Historical Commission.
Mr. Hromadka worked on the design of this project while employed at Tappé Associates of Boston. http://www.tappe.com/Batchelder_Elementary_School.html
